As a NFR Expert AI Risk Management at ING, you shape and maintain AI risk frameworks, advise and challenge 1LoD on controls and strategy, oversee (Gen)AI risks and reporting, monitor regulations (incl. EU AI Act), and support senior management.

The AI Risk Management team is part of ING’s Non-Financial Risk (NFR) domain. It plays a pivotal role in enabling the safe and scalable adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the organization. The team develops and maintains AI risk frameworks, advises internal stakeholders, and ensures ING’s AI strategy aligns with global standards and regulatory expectations. Through close collaboration with other 2nd Line of Defense (2LoD) functions and external regulators, the team helps ING innovate responsibly while maintaining robust risk controls.

Specific Function

The team contributes to ING’s global risk management by:

  • Leading the maintenance and expansion of the AI Risk Management framework, leveraging existing risk frameworks (Model Risk, Non-Financial Risk, Compliance).
  • Challenging and advising the 1st Line of Defense (1LoD) on AI strategy, control standards, and risk processes, including oversight of AI portfolios and initiatives.
  • Driving optimization of risk processes to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and scalability.
  • Acting as the central contact point for senior management on all aspects of AI risk, including regulatory interactions and external advocacy.
  • Defining the 2LoD AI Risk strategy and optimizing risk processes to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and scalability across entities and use cases.

Job description 

The NFR Specialist AI Risk Manager is an individual contributor responsible for:

  • Cooperate in setting and maintaining (Gen)AI-related policies, governance and mandatory instructions.
  • Challenging, advising on, and improving control standards, procedures, and 1st line strategy.
  • Providing expertise and support to NFR, Compliance and Model Risk teams globally.
  • Overseeing (Gen)AI risk across the bank, ensuring all material risks are registered, reported, and escalated as needed.
  • Cooperate in thematic deep dives and reviews on operational risk.
  • Support senior management in decision making
  • Monitoring regulatory developments and ensuring ING’s compliance with relevant guidelines (e.g. EU AI Act).
  • Cooperate in simplification and risk-based approaches in NFR, Compliance and Model Risk processes.
  • Driving simplification and risk-based approaches in NFR, Compliance and Model Risk processes.
  • Driving the risk culture in 1LoD

This role is meaningful for its impact on ING’s risk culture, compliance, and operational resilience, contributing directly to the bank’s ability to manage (Gen)AI risks effectively.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Cooperate in policy setting and maintenance for (Gen)AI.
  • Overseeing compliance and simplification of NFR-owned documents and templates.
  • Challenging 1LoD documents and templates (Control Standard, (Gen)AI Procedures, Decision Tree, KRIs).
  • Supporting NFR, Compliance and Model Risk teams with (Gen)AI expertise and resolving escalations.
  • Performing oversight of (Gen)AI risk and ensuring clear risk messaging in Bank NFRD.
  • Cooperate in thematic deep dives and reviews on AI risk.
  • Monitoring external regulatory developments and communicating requirements.

Specific Knowledge and Experience

  • University degree, preferably in a quantitative field.
  • At least 5 years of related work experience, including global regulations on analytical solutions.
  • Analytical expertise with AI/ML applications in banking and risk domains.
  • Some experience in first, second, and/or third line risk management.
  • Some experience in risk management in innovative environments
  • Communicates clearly and can explain ideas in a simple way to colleagues who may not have a technical background.
  • Uses a risk-aware approach to help identify important issues and supports decision-making by seeking guidance when needed.
  • Works well with others, follows established standards, and is willing to learn how to handle challenging situations.

Reporting Line 

NFR Specialist AI Risk Management reports hierarchically to Global Head of AI Risk Management located in Amsterdam.
