Senior/Principal Validation Lead - Model Validation Trading & Banking Book Risks - ING

Locatie: Amsterdam

Model Validation Trading & Banking Book Risks is looking for an enthusiastic Senior/ Principal Validation Lead, who loves to be the expert leader in one of our validation squads. ING’s Model Validation Trading & Banking Book Risks tribe (MVTBBR) is an energetic, innovative and collaborative international team of currently about 35 highly qualified professionals of various quantitative backgrounds, located in Amsterdam. We are responsible for validating the Trading & Banking Book Risk models used by ING worldwide, in more than 40 countries. By bringing in our expertise, our aim is to independently assess whether a particular model is fit for the purpose it was designed for, based on the latest theories, empirical evidence, regulations, best practices & technological innovations. We play an important role in safeguarding a model’s quality. In fact, our mission is “to be the independent gatekeeper of the quality of ING’s models, thereby empowering ING to stay a step ahead with innovative modelling”. Our work has a real impact, driven by continuous improvements. We contribute to sound business practices, supporting healthy, sustainable ING and global financial stability.

Following ING’s Think Forward Strategy to become the next generation digital bank, as well as the Model Risk Management (r)evolution that is picking up worldwide, our team has been substantially growing (and will further grow) in size lately. This calls for an organizational redesign, whereby we are introducing the role of Senior/Principal Validation Lead (next to Chapter Leads and Product Owners).

What you'll do

As a Senior/Principal Validation Lead you love to focus on and specialize in the content and want to be the go-to-expert/expert leader for the topics relevant in your squad, both regarding quantitative (e.g. financial, econometric, mathematical, computational, programming) knowledge, business knowledge and related regulations. You are fully aware of internal and external developments and understand the bigger picture and relation to other topics. You pro-actively share your knowledge with others, supporting their further development. Hence you are seen as a true “authority”.

This means that you:

  • are the senior expert/expert leader contributing to the squad’s backlog, aiming at achieving the team goals together
  • take responsibility for the quality of end-deliverables, e.g. the validation work performed by squad members of the projects that you supervise, or policy work
  • like to (pro-actively) share your knowledge via a.o. reviewing validation reports, giving presentations (for people within & outside our tribe) and teaching
  • are the go-to person for technical questions, you coach the validators from a content perspective and have weekly meetings with them for the validations you supervise
  • keep abreast with the latest developments in the model areas in scope and you visit & present at relevant conferences
  • act as a trusted advisor and sparring partner for senior management
  • join the tribe lead to e.g. model committees, audits & onsite ECB inspections, where you present your (reviewed) validation reports
  • build bridges with the business/model users, aiming to further understand the model, its context, its use and therewith further enhance our added value and the cooperation with our stakeholders (while maintaining MV’s independence)
  • set & improve on our validation standards & Validation Frameworks, in cooperation with the Chapter Lead
  • frequently align with the Chapter Lead(s), Product Owner and the Agile Coach.

You’ll work closely with the Chapter Lead(s) and Product Owner. Together you ensure that the work is effectively allocated within the squad. Together with the Chapter Lead and/or Product Owner, you determine a project’s overall duration (which the validators subsequently refine into milestones). Together with the Chapter Lead and Product Owner, you contribute to the further design of the tribe’s vision & strategy and drive the execution.

How to succeed

To take on the Senior/Principal Validation Lead role, you bring in senior expert knowledge, highly advanced quantitative validation methods and techniques, and the ability to think on a strategic level.

  • You have an academic degree (MSc or PhD) in a quantitative field such as Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Financial/Quantitative Economics or Computational/Data Science
  • You have at least 8 to 10 years of related work experience in modelling and/or validation of models in the risk areas in scope of the squad, including extensive knowledge on these, the business and the associated regulations
  • You have sufficient experience in leading and/or coaching others in a hierarchical or project role from a content perspective. Teaching experience is a pré
  • You have experience with the agile way of working and have an interest in progressing with this
  • You have sufficient experience with adequate and effective stakeholder management, as well as auditors, regulators and onsite inspections
  • You have experience in being a (pro-active) sparring partner/advisor to Senior Management, in which your presentations are well structured, easy to follow and can be both high level and detailed (on e.g. the contents)
  • You have high-quality standards, you are organised & persuasive, you like to interact and are a role model in these aspects
  • You have fluent communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing
  • You are prepared to travel occasionally. Your main base is Amsterdam
  • You are enthusiastic, communicative, flexible and you have good people management skills
  • You are transparent, open-minded and value diversity and inclusion
  • To effectively coach your chapter members on the content and be able to take end-responsibility on the quality of validations, you bring in senior/principal level modelling/validation expertise.
