Senior Credit Risk Expert - Quality Assurance Function

Role purpose: Strengthen the quality, consistency, and regulatory alignment of credit risk decisions by providing independent quality assurance (QA), oversight, and challenge across credit risk processes, models, and governance.

Key responsibilities

Design and execute QA reviews of credit risk activities (e.g., underwriting, rating/scorecard use, portfolio monitoring, provisioning, and limit management).

Assess compliance with internal policies, risk appetite, and external regulations; document findings and recommend corrective actions.

Perform thematic reviews and deep-dives to identify systemic issues, root causes, and control weaknesses.

Challenge credit proposals, risk assessments, and decision rationales; ensure appropriate escalation and approvals.

Monitor remediation plans, track action closure, and report QA results to senior stakeholders and governance forums.

Contribute to continuous improvement of credit risk frameworks, procedures, and controls; support audit and regulatory examinations.

Required skills and experience

Senior expertise in credit risk (corporate, SME, retail, or wholesale), including risk grading, underwriting standards, and portfolio analytics.

Strong knowledge of risk governance, internal controls, and regulatory expectations (e.g., EBA/ECB, Basel, IFRS 9, or local equivalents).

Proven QA, second-line oversight, internal audit, or credit review experience with clear, evidence-based reporting.

Excellent analytical skills, stakeholder management, and ability to provide effective independent challenge.

High attention to detail, structured documentation, and strong written communication.

As a Senior Credit Risk Expert - Quality Assurance, you will lead independent testing efforts across the credit risk lifecycle, ensuring ING’s controls are effective, compliant, and futureready. You will guide junior colleagues, challenge execution, and drive remediation of issues across global teams. This role requires deep expertise in credit risk and strong leadership capabilities. You will be responsible for designing testing methodologies, leading reviews, and presenting findings to senior management. Your work will directly contribute to strengthening ING’s risk governance and ensuring regulatory compliance.

As a Senior Credit Risk Expert - Quality Assurance, you will:

Lead 2LoD policy adherence testing, define testing methodology, and prepare planning cycles.
Select risk-based samples using data analytics and guide junior colleagues in execution.
Challenge credit risk execution and control processes across 1LoD, Risk, and GCR.
Independently draft high-quality QA reports, register observations, and propose concrete improvements.
Monitor control performance and ensure timely remediation of issues and gaps.
Represent ING in regulatory and audit engagements, managing high-priority issues and ensuring effective resolution.
Coach and mentor junior team members, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning.

A Master’s degree.
10–15 years of experience in credit risk.
